Introducing Abbey Lee Kershaw

This week I bring you one of fashion's most controversial models.  I first discovered Abbey Lee when she starred in a South Korean fashion commercial which showed her scaling a tall building, then throwing herself off it, fleeing some invisible adversary. As she fell in slow motion, her outfits changed, cataloguing the brand. The video was almost immediately banned, and the outcry was intense, since the suicide rates of models is quite high, and South Korea holds the highest rate of female suicides in the world.  Good luck trying to find that video. I thought it was beautiful, but then again, I'm morbid.

The rake thin model with multiple piercings and as many tattoos has raised many eyebrows for more than just that video.  Her doll-like face gives her a childlike quality which contrasts starkly with her rocker girl reality. Many were quick to condemn photographer Terry Richardson for exploiting her in racy photoshoots, when Abbey herself claims to be completely cool with it. What makes us more uncomfortable, the thought of a sleazy older photographer exploiting a young model, or a young model being so confident in her experimental sexuality?

Either way, she makes headlines. She is much sought after for runway despite falling once at Rodarte, and fainting at Alexander McQueen due to a too tight corset. She missed a season of runway due to a broken ankle, and yet when she was able to, she raked in $100,000 just to grace the Gucci catwalk. Obviously there's something about Abbey. Let me know what you think of her.

  1. I want to see that video!! MAkes me think of a ad campaing that each picture was the result of suicide, usually falling. It was breathtaking.

  2. That may have been the one. Once I saw it, I was hooked on her. So doll-like, so destructive.

  3. Like a poison. She is amazing, perfect, beautiful, but something morbid and deadly about the way she gazes out of the page at you. Like she has a terrible secret but she wants to play before she shares it.
