Introducing Jourdan Dunn - Super-Modeling From The Margins

Jourdan Dunn has attracted attention because of the lack of black models in the fashion modelling industry.  As Sarah Doukas, head of Storm Management, said, "I feel, if she does have great success, she will have a big effect on the way people look at different kinds of beauty". I have compiled highlights of her career, including runway work, ad campaigns and editorials. As you view them, think what her work says about the fashion industry.
What kind of ads and editorials does she get? How do these compare to the work European models get? Her runway work shows that she has high fashion potential. So why then, do her editorials focus more on athletic looks, or more commercial work? These are some questions I'd like to consider over the following week.
Jourdan made her runway debut in the New York shows in the fall of 2007, walking in shows for Marc Jacobsand Polo Ralph Lauren, among others. In 2007, she was featured on British Vogue as a "new star," and in 2008 Style.com listed her as one of the top 10 newcomers. In July 2008, she appeared on the cover of the Italian Vogue issue devoted entirely to black models, and was shot for an editorial in American Vogue the same month.

She was featured on the cover of Italian, Teen, American, and British Vogue' and has been on the covers of i-D, Pop, Sunday Times Style, Luella magazine , ASOS.com magazine, French Elle. She has appeared in editorials for Teen, Italian, Russian, French, Japanese, British, American Vogue, French Elle, i-D, Dazed & Confused, W, and V. Dunn has modelled for Gap, Topshop, Jaeger, Shiatzy Chen, Benetton, H&M, Neiman Marcus, Victoria's Secret, Saks Fifth Avenue, Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry, and Calvin Klein. In November 2008, Dunn was named "Best Model of the Year" at the British Fashion Awards.  She appears on Teen Vogue's November 2009 issue alongside fellow model, Chanel Iman, and discusses her and Chanel's previous competitive relationship in the accompanying article.

Dunn grew up in Greenford, West London. She lives in East London and had her first child, Riley, a boy, on 8 December 2009 in London. She had been with her boyfriend, the baby's father, for five years before he was arrested just two months after her son was born for dealing cocaine. She is now a single mother, dealing with Riley's Sickle Cell Disease on her own. Jourdan manages to balance a stressful life with her professional career, and does it with grace and glamour.
She walked in the Jean Paul Gaultier show while pregnant with her son Riley

  1. I love her so much! She is absolutely gorgeous.
Although that pregnant picture is of Liya Kebede not Jourdan.
